Selling a junk car in Saskatchewan: the paperwork

What to have ready, what to sign, and what to do with your plate when you sell a vehicle for scrap. We pay $300 to $3,000 and fill out the bill of sale with you.

Sign the transfer of ownership on your Saskatchewan registration, give the buyer a signed bill of sale, keep your licence plate, and sort out the registration and insurance on the old vehicle with SGI. When you sell to X Auto Group, we fill out the bill of sale with you at pickup.

Before pickup

  1. Find your registration. The transfer of ownership section is on your Saskatchewan Certificate of Registration. If it’s lost, SGI can replace it. Call us first and we’ll tell you what we need.
  2. Have photo ID ready. The name should match the registration.
  3. Check for liens. If there’s a loan on the vehicle, it has to be paid out before the sale. A Personal Property Registry search shows any registered liens for a small fee.
  4. Empty the car. Check the glovebox, trunk and under the seats. Remove garage openers and toll or parking passes.
  5. Take off your licence plate. In Saskatchewan the plate stays with you, not the vehicle.

At pickup

  1. Sign the transfer of ownership on the registration and hand it over.
  2. Sign the bill of sale. It should show the date, the VIN, the price, and both names and signatures. We bring it and fill it out with you.
  3. Get paid. Cash or e-transfer, before the truck leaves.
  4. Keep copies of the bill of sale and a photo of the signed registration.

After the sale

  • Put your plate on your next vehicle, or return it to SGI or a motor licence issuer.
  • Contact SGI or a motor licence issuer about the registration and insurance on the vehicle you sold, and ask about any refund owed.
  • Cancel any private insurance on the vehicle.

Rules change, so check the details with SGI: Cancel or change registration and Plate guidelines and replacement.

Paperwork questions

Still unsure? Call and ask. You’ll talk to the yard, not a call centre.

Do I give the licence plate to the buyer?

No. In Saskatchewan the plate stays with you. Take it off before the vehicle is towed.

I lost my registration. Can I still sell?

Call us first. SGI can replace a lost registration certificate, and we’ll tell you what we need from you.

What if there’s a loan on the car?

A vehicle with a registered lien can’t be sold free and clear until the lien is paid out. You can check for liens with a Personal Property Registry search.

Can I sell a junk car without a title?

Saskatchewan doesn’t use titles. Your ownership document is the vehicle registration. If you’ve lost it, call us first and we’ll tell you what we need.

Does the buyer need a safety inspection?

Not for a vehicle that’s being scrapped. We tow it, so it never needs to be driven.

We’ll handle the bill of sale. You just call.

One call, one firm offer, free towing and payment on the spot. We pay $300 to $3,000.
